FOR MEDICAL DEVICE MACHINING

Quoting and production tracking for medical device component shops

Medical parts are small, costly to make and unforgiving. Swiss-type turning in titanium and 316L, then deburring, polishing, passivation and cleaning, with a documentation trail for every batch. Kojo handles quoting, production tracking, inventory and payments, and works beside the ISO 13485 or customer-mandated quality system you already run.

HOW THE WORK IS PRICED

What really sets the price in medical device components.

Unit cost is driven by material, cycle time and finishing. Implants are machined from implant-grade material: titanium Ti-6Al-4V ELI to ASTM F136, 316L and 316LVM stainless, cobalt-chrome and PEEK, bought with certificates at prices well above commercial grades. Bone screws, pins and small plates are typically run on Swiss-type sliding-head lathes and multi-axis mills, where cycle time and bar used per part decide the price. Instruments in 17-4 PH and martensitic stainless need machining plus heat treatment, grinding and hand finishing.

Then come the costs that commercial work does not carry. Deburring and polishing under magnification, laser marking, passivation, ultrasonic cleaning and controlled packaging all take time per part. Inspection is heavy on small features, and a new part often goes through validation batches at the OEM's request before regular orders flow. Volumes range from a few hundred instruments to tens of thousands of screws a year. Once a part is validated, OEMs are slow to re-source it and slow to accept a price change, so a costing mistake made at the quote stage can stay with you for years.

THE HEADACHES

Where the time and margin go.

Finishing left out of the estimate

On some parts, deburring, polishing, marking, passivation and cleaning take as long as the machining. They are the first thing a rushed estimate forgets.

Bar usage nobody measures

Implant-grade bar is costly, and remnants, scrapped setups and rejected parts add up without anyone comparing usage per part against standard.

Rejects on tiny features

A thread or radius out by a few microns scraps a part that already carries full material, machining and finishing cost. These losses need to be seen by shift.

Prices locked for the life of the part

Once a part is validated the OEM rarely accepts a price change, so an under-quoted part keeps losing money year after year.

THE WORKFLOW

From enquiry to payment.

  1. 01

    RFQ from the OEM

Drawings, material specification, annual volume, and the finishing, marking, cleaning, packaging and documentation the OEM expects.

  2. 02

    Process planning and costing

Choose the machine (Swiss-type, turn-mill or five-axis), plan operations and finishing, and cost material, cycle time, finishing, inspection and packaging.

  3. 03

    Quote and samples

Send the quote, follow up, and machine samples or a first article for the OEM's evaluation.

  4. 04

    Validation

Run the validation batches the OEM asks for and freeze the process before regular orders start.

  5. 05

    Production batches

Machine, deburr, polish, mark, passivate and clean each batch, with in-process and final inspection, and batch records kept in your quality system.

  6. 06

    Dispatch and payment

Pack and dispatch with the batch documentation, then invoice and follow up against the agreed payment terms.

WHERE KOJO FITS

Kojo for medical device components.

STARTER TO ENTERPRISE

The same system as you grow.

Start with quoting, add production, inventory and payments, then scale across plants with integrations and a dedicated support team.

STARTER

Start with quoting: your cycle times, machine hour rates, finishing rates and quote format set up, so every OEM enquiry is costed the same way.

GROWTH

Add BOM costing, shop floor logging and inventory once parts move into regular batches, so bar usage, rejects and stock are visible every shift.

ENTERPRISE

For groups with more than one plant, or a machining unit and a separate finishing site: multi-site roll-up reporting, an open API to your accounting or ERP system, a dedicated support team and an uptime SLA.

NUMBERS TO WATCH

What to track every week.

BAR USED PER PART AGAINST STANDARD

On implant-grade titanium and 316L, a small rise in usage per part is real money across a year's volume.

REJECT RATE BY PART AND OPERATION

Shows which features or machines are scrapping parts that already carry most of their cost.

FINISHING TIME PER PART AGAINST QUOTE

Polishing, marking and cleaning are where medical quotes most often go wrong.

SWISS-TYPE LATHE UTILISATION

Sliding-head lathes usually carry the most valuable hours in the shop, so idle time there costs the most.

COMMON MATERIALS

QUESTIONS

Medical Device Components on Kojo.

Does Kojo give us ISO 13485 batch traceability?

No. Kojo handles quoting, production tracking, inventory and payments. Batch records, traceability and validation stay in the quality system you already run, and Kojo does not replace it.

Can it cost polishing, passivation and cleaning?

Yes, from your own rates and costing rules, set up during onboarding. Machining is costed from your cycle times and machine hour rates, and finishing, outside processes, inspection and packaging are added the way you already price them.

We run everything in Excel today. What happens to that data?

Kiviro brings your existing Excel data into Kojo during setup and trains the team, and quoting goes live in about three weeks. Your data stays yours, and you can export it.
