HOW IT WORKS
| Round bar | π ÷ 4 × D² × L × density |
| Hex bar | 0.866 × AF² × L × density (AF = across flats) |
| Square bar | A² × L × density |
| Flat or plate | W × T × L × density |
| Tube or pipe | π ÷ 4 × (OD² − ID²) × L × density, where ID = OD − 2 × wall |
DENSITIES
QUESTIONS
Work out the cross-section area in mm², multiply by the length in mm to get the volume, then multiply by the density in g/cm³ and divide by 1,000,000 to get kilograms.
Most carbon and alloy steels are about 7.85 g/cm³. Stainless steels are around 7.9 to 8.0, aluminium about 2.7 and brass about 8.4 to 8.5. Each material page lists its own value.
Bar is supplied with size tolerances and is often charged on nominal weight per metre from the mill. Small differences of a few percent are normal.
